Boring Sunday?

As you have probably noticed in Germany everything is closed on a Sunday, this might be hard to believe for you, anhow reality here.

One little exception for shopping tours on Sunday in Nuernberg is the main station, as well as the design shop next to the Neues Musuem where you can find top books about Design, Architecture and Art, and a great gift section with little design gadgets.

Also worth noting is that on Sunday you pay only 1€ to visit the collection in Neues Museum.

Where to eat 1

Before calling it a night, we dont want to leave you out there hungry, thats why some of the best off the beaten track eatery picks for Nuernberg, firstly local specialities:

Gregor Samsa
- famous for the private atmosphere and the gulash - find it HERE

Schäufeleswärtschaft- - famous for its franconian PORK SHOULDER which is a regional specialty in Midfranconia. The flesh with the long bone is stewed and fried to obtain a crisp rind. The Franconian pork shoulder served with potato dumplings and lettuce or cabbage in a dark sauce and is regarded by connoisseurs as the "i" - dot the regional cuisine. Find it HERE

In case you have a car and fancy a little tour into wild franconia, the farer you go out of the city, the less you pay and the better the food gets. So thinking about driving some 30 km is not a bad idea for a nice saturday or sunday lunch. You can go for example to Brauerei Hofmann in Hohenschwärtz where you can find excellent locally brewed beer as well as finest regional food. In genereal there are lots of breweries in the area of Gräfenberg, and if you fancy a little stroll after your greasy meal ask for the "5 Seidla Weg" -- a hiking tour that the 5 local breweries in that area together.

The Rabbit- or Young Here

As you have probably already noticed in the background of this blogg, the Rabbit is one of the main symbols of the city of Nuernberg.
The watercolor painting was created in 1502 by the German artist Albrecht Dürer with a strong attention to detail making it look just like a photograph.

However, in 1984, Dürers Rabbit was re-interpreted from sculpturist Juergen Görtz to create a symbol for the people of Nürnberg, as their original painting is exhibitioned in the Albertina gallery situated in Vienna, Austria.

You now obviously recognize a slight difference when comparing the painting to the sculpture as it can be found today on Dürer Square just below the Nürnberg castle. If you think about our modern times of today, would a rabbit look different? Would our industrialised, materially oversaturated nature influence the form of the rabbit
These and more thoughts have obviously driven Jürgen Görtz when creating the Rabbit sculpture for Nürnberg.

If you go in a warm summer night you might find Nürnbergs youth hanging out on Dürer square, making music and enjoying big bottles of Altstadthof Brewery beers.
